Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” Elizabeth Stone
Photography is about capturing moments in time so that you don't forget them, so that you will be able to look back at them and share them with friends, family and future generations. For significant moments we hire a photographer to help capture those moments and tell the story artistically. I can not think of a more significant moment in life then the birth of a child.
Here are a few of my favorite births I have had the pleasure and privilege to capture:
The Truth About Birth Photography
Birth is my favorite thing to photograph. I am there to tell the story of your baby's firsts; first breath, first time mom and baby lock eyes, first time baby and dad meet. I get to capture the emotion and beauty of your child's birth.
A birth photographer should be a professional and she has to know photography AND birth. She needs to be able to read the room and the mother. Please interview your photographer and make sure she will be able to handle such a momentous task as capturing this lifetime event.
"my doula says she can take pictures during my birth so I don't need a photographer." Your doula may be able to snap off a few shots for you while she is there, and that is awesome of her to do for you, but her main job is to take care of you, not photograph your birth. She most likely is not a photographer either and does not have the same equipment as a professional photographer would have. My camera is specially designed to handle the low light that often happens during a birth. I also have an external flash that I control so that if I need to use it it will not bother the laboring mom. Most laboring moms don't want bright lights shining on them and a regular flash would be quite irritating, don't you think? Then there is the post processing...
Does that mean there are no doulas that can do both? Of course not. If they are trained in both professionally then sure! Interview and ask questions. Ask to see samples of their work. Talk to their past clients. Make sure they are a good fit for what you need/want.
If you want your birth story told through photography hire someone that will be dedicated to doing just that. Birth photography is not for everyone and that is ok. You might want to think about a Fresh Plum Session instead.
